A step exam may be taken up to three times in a calendar year. If you pass a step test, you can only retake it if the seven-year window for taking all Step examinations has passed.

Anatomy, behavioral science, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, and multidisciplinary subjects like aging, genetics, and nutrition are among the fundamental scientific subjects included in the test. The Policies and Procedures Regarding Irregular Behavior and the comprehensive guidelines for the USMLE application must also be thoroughly read and understood by applicants.

Data and Records You Offer

Your permanent record will contain all the information you submit to us as part of any application or service request, including the data you submit to apply for a USMLE/ECFMG identification number or another identifying number. Emails and other contact with us will also be permanently recorded in your file.

All documents you send us for certification, including translations and supporting files, will be included in your permanent file and will not be taken back. Original papers should be sent elsewhere.

Processing of Applications and Service Requests

How Can I Apply for the USMLE?

Applications are submitted through the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) for United States or Canadian students.

To apply to take the USMLE, students from the UK and other countries must register with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

Students must be enrolled in or have completed an LCME-accredited medical degree (for students from the US or Canada) or an international medical degree listed on the WDMS to take Steps 1 and 2. (for overseas students).

Students who have completed Steps 1 and 2 and obtained their certified medical degree as specified above are eligible to pursue Step 3. It is important to remember that many students decide to take Step 3 later in their residency, and you are not required to have passed the test to begin your residency.
